BMR Basal Metabolic Rate Calculator
Compute your basal metabolic rate with the Mifflin-St Jeor formula and your daily burn at light, moderate and high activity.
| Light (walks, light exercise) | 2,267 kcal / day |
|---|---|
| Moderate (regular training) | 2,556 kcal / day |
| High (physical job or heavy training) | 2,844 kcal / day |
What is it
Your BMR (basal metabolic rate) is the energy your body burns lying completely still — breathing, heart, brain, temperature. It is the floor of your daily budget. Multiply it by an activity factor and you get the calories you actually need to eat to hold your weight.
Notes & fun facts
Why can a tall friend eat two pizzas without gaining while you stare at one slice? Size first: standing height contributes about 6.25 kcal per centimeter, so the BMR gap between 170 cm and 190 cm is already bigger than a hamburger. Metabolism differences between people are real but rarely as dramatic as diets advertise.
Origin & history
The first famous equation was built by Harris and Benedict at the Carnegie Nutrition Laboratory, published in 1919. In 1990, physicians Mifflin, St Jeor and colleagues re-measured hundreds of modern adults and found a better-fitting formula — today the Mifflin-St Jeor equation is the one most doctors and apps trust.
