What is it

A password is only as strong as its randomness and its length. This tool builds each password by drawing characters straight from the browser’s cryptographically secure random source, so the numbers are not predictable. More characters and wider character sets mean more possible combinations — that is what makes a password hard to guess.

Notes & fun facts

The classic advice "use a password you can remember" quietly died once people reused the same memorable one on fifty sites. Today a password manager plus a 20-character random string is the normal answer — humans are terrible at inventing randomness, so let the machine do it.

Origin & history

Random passwords as a practice came with multi-user time-sharing systems in the 1960s: MIT’s CTSS and Multix needed each user to have a login key. The NIST publication SP 800-63 (2004, revised 2017) later standardized length and complexity guidance. The crypto.getRandomValues API arrived in browsers around 2011–2012.
