Password Generator

Create strong random passwords, measure their entropy and strength in real time, and generate up to 10 at once with one-click copy.

What is it

A password is only as strong as how many guesses it takes to crack it. Entropy, measured in bits, is exactly that: 64 bits means a computer would try on average 2^63 combinations. Longer passwords beat clever symbols, and mixing character sets raises the pool of possibilities. This tool generates cryptographically random passwords in your browser.

Notes & fun facts

There is a famous xkcd comic where a password like «correct horse battery staple» beats «Tr0ub4dor3». The joke landed because people assumed complexity beats length, while math says length wins by a mile. This tool’s strength meter is built on that idea.

Origin & history

Login passwords appeared with time-sharing systems in the early 1960s, most notably MIT’s CTSS (around 1961, Fernando Corbató’s team). The entropy framework itself comes from Claude Shannon’s information theory of 1948. Modern guidance — prefer long passphrases, skip forced symbol soup — crystallized with NIST’s SP 800-63B revision in 2017.
